What's inside

Eight ingredients in a
pickle soda.

Piklo is an original pickle soda made in Ooltewah, Tennessee. Imagine dill pickle juice, but sweetened slightly with cane sugar. This is everything in the can and what each one does — including the four ingredients that make it an all-natural electrolyte drink.

Ever wonder what makes Piklo so refreshing?

Eight ingredients, four of which are electrolytes. Here is what is inside every can, in the order it is printed on the back.

  1. Carbonated Filtered Water

Hydrates the body and provides the refreshing sparkling base.

  2. White Distilled Vinegar

Contains acetic acid, which helps support healthy blood sugar responses after meals and contributes to the drink’s tangy flavor.

  3. Sodium Citrate

    Adds sodium and buffers acidity.

  4. Cane Sugar

Provides a small amount of glucose that helps improve intestinal sodium and water absorption, supporting hydration.

  5. Sea Salt

Supplies sodium, the primary electrolyte responsible for maintaining fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle function.

  6. Natural Flavor

Provides the signature dill pickle taste without adding significant calories or sugar.

  7. Potassium Citrate

Provides potassium, an essential electrolyte that supports muscle contraction, nerve function, and normal hydration.

  8. Magnesium Citrate

Provides magnesium to support normal muscle function, nerve signaling, and energy metabolism.

What is pickle soda?

Pickle soda is a carbonated soft drink built on pickle brine instead of cola or fruit. Imagine dill pickle juice, but sweetened slightly with cane sugar — the vinegar and the dill are there, and the sugar balances them so it lands closer to a soda than to a jar of pickles. Piklo also carries three electrolytes, which most sodas do not. It is sold in 12 fl oz (355 mL) cans.

Is there real pickle in it?

Yes. Natural flavor carries the dill pickle taste, and white distilled vinegar is the second ingredient. That is where the brine note comes from — it is not a flavoring pretending to be pickle.

Is Piklo the same as drinking pickle juice?

No. Pickle juice is the leftover brine from a jar: thick, salty and sour, with nothing balancing it. Piklo is carbonated, sweetened with cane sugar, and built to be drunk cold on its own. People who find straight pickle juice too much usually find Piklo is not.

What is not in a can

The can lists eight ingredients and nothing else. There are no preservatives and no artificial flavors. None of the eight contain caffeine or alcohol, so there is neither in the can. The only sweetener is cane sugar — 10g of it.

Why vinegar and sugar together?

Vinegar brings acetic acid, which is the sharp, tangy edge you taste first. On its own that is bracing. The cane sugar sits underneath it and rounds it off, and the sea salt stops the whole thing reading as simply sweet. Take any one of the three away and it stops working.

What the citrates are doing

Sodium, potassium and magnesium citrate are the three ingredients people ask about most. In a drink like this they act as buffers — they hold the acidity steady, so the tartness in the last mouthful is the same as the first rather than turning harsh as the can warms up.

How to drink it

Cold, straight from the can. The label says best served chilled and it is right — the colder it is, the more the carbonation carries the brine and the less the sweetness dominates. It also mixes: the vinegar and salt do the same job in a glass that a pickleback does.

Ingredients and nutrition information are transcribed from the production can. The printed label is always the authority.
